To Brown Students: Summer 2021 Enrollment & Petition Process, due 3/1

Updates

Dear Students,

Over the past several weeks, many of you have reached out to the College about how you can take courses during the Summer 2021 term. Unlike other years, Summer 2021 will be a full-length semester that is part of the 2020-21 academic year. Below, you will find an overview of the summer enrollment policies and processes for this year. Please note that tuition for Summer 2021 will be assessed at the standard 2020-21 rates. Aided students should review the additional information available on the Office of Financial Aid website.

Summer Enrollment Eligibility
The following students will be eligible to enroll in the Summer 2021 term:

  • Students who returned from a leave in Spring 2021 and who wish to enroll in the summer as their second full-time semester for this academic year*

  • Students currently on leave who submitted a return from leave request in ASK for Summer 2021 as their first or second full-time semester for this academic year*

  • Students who were enrolled full-time in both fall and spring semesters may petition (as described below) in ASK to potentially enroll in 1, 2, or more courses by exception.

*Note that students who wish to enroll in Summer 2021 term as their first or second semester this academic year must enroll as full-time students (i.e., for between three and five courses).

Enrollment Confirmation
If you were on a leave of absence during Fall 2020 and wish to enroll as a full-time student this summer, you will need to confirm your enrollment in Summer 2021 via Ufunds by 5:00pm EST on Monday, March 1, 2021. You should have already received a separate message with a link to the enrollment confirmation form. Submitting this form by the March 1 deadline will enable you to pre-register for summer classes in mid-March. If you do not submit this form by the deadline, you will not be able to register for classes this summer.

If you were on a leave of absence in Spring 2021 and submitted a return from leave request for Summer 2021 by the February 1 deadline, you will receive a decision on your return request this week (week of February 15-19), and if approved, you will automatically be eligible to pre-register as a full-time student for the summer term.

Petition Process - Due Monday, March 1
If you were enrolled in both the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 terms, you must petition for academic permission from the College if you wish to enroll in Summer 2021. Priority will be given to students for whom summer enrollment is necessary for timely degree completion. Before you petition, please thoroughly review the Summer Enrollment FAQ. You can submit this petition in ASK (Student Petitions → CAS: Petition → My Petitions, click “New Petition” and create a petition for a “3rd term exception to enroll in Summer 2021”) until 5:00pm EST on Monday, March 1. Petitions submitted after this deadline will not be considered. You will be notified of petition decisions by March 15 to ensure that, if approved, you will be able to pre-register for summer courses. Please note that tuition will be assessed for all enrolled students. For more information about financial aid, please visit the website of the Office of Financial Aid.

If you have specific questions about academic planning, please feel free to select an appointment slot to speak with an academic advising dean about your circumstances. Although all deans can discuss your situation, seniors should seek an appointment with one of the Degree Completion Deans: Bhattacharyya, Cohen, Garcia, J. Lee, and Rome.

Sincerely,

The College Advising Deans
