To Brown Students: Get Vaccinated for a Better Summer 2021

Updates

Dear Brown Undergraduate Students,

As we approach the Summer term of the 2020-2021 academic year, we are strongly encouraging all undergraduates who will be on-campus from May to August to get vaccinated. As you know from prior communications, the COVID-19 vaccination will be required of all students for the Fall 2021 semester.

Vaccines are not required this summer, however if the summer undergraduate student population can reach 90% vaccinated and general public health conditions continue to improve as we expect they will, we will be able to more quickly return to the normal campus operations we are all missing, such as in-person dining, student events, and increased capacity of the Nelson Fitness Center.

Being fully vaccinated also means not having to quarantine if you are exposed to COVID-19. Students who are enrolled in courses this summer or otherwise authorized to be on-campus for research, employment, athletics or other reasons can help us meet the goal of a 90% vaccination rate by getting vaccinated as soon as they are able.

The 90% goal is achievable given the supply of COVID-19 vaccine in Rhode Island and elsewhere. We expect most students can be fully vaccinated by the end of May, which will make for a much safer and more enjoyable campus experience in June, July and August.

Vaccine Access Information:

  • All individuals 16 years of age and older who live, work or study in Rhode Island are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine at no cost and with no requirement for insurance.
  • Vaccination appointments are readily available at the Dunkin Donuts Center in downtown Providence, and you can schedule at www.vaccinateri.org.
  • This week, on Thursday, April 29 the State has reserved 1500 appointments for scheduling by Brown community members. Any appointments remaining will be released to the public on Tuesday morning at 9:00 am, so schedule your vaccination appointment now at: https://www.vaccinateri.org//reg/9255701639
  • Brown University Shuttle service will continue from College Hill to the Omni and the Dunkin Donuts Center through at least the end of May to make it easy for students and other members of the community to get their vaccination.
  • For students who have already been vaccinated, or will be vaccinated soon please upload your final vaccination cards directly to the Health Services Patient Portal. For more information, please visit the Verify Your Vaccination information section on the Healthy Brown site. We also encourage you to take a photo of your vaccination card for your safekeeping and easy reference.
  • Where applicable, at the appropriate interval and in most states, you can complete a 2 dose vaccination schedule in the state where you will be, even if it is not in the state of Rhode Island. So, if you are leaving Rhode Island for the summer but can get a first dose here before you leave, go ahead and do so.

We recognize that not everyone can get a vaccination and respect and support religious and medical exemptions for those who qualify. In addition, we know that international students in particular may not have access to a vaccination before they return to Rhode Island, but you can get one when you are here. Finally, this message is being communicated to all undergraduate students and we know that not all of you will be on-campus this summer, but please get your vaccination as soon as possible both for your own health and safety and in preparation for coming back to campus in the fall.

Summer at Brown and in Rhode Island is a special time - help us get to 90% and we can enjoy it that much more.

Sincerely,

Russell C. Carey
