To Brown Students on Campus: End of Quiet Period

Updates

In light of the encouraging health indicators since students’ arrival, we are writing to inform you that we are able to end the Quiet Period early.

Starting today, students who arrived during the scheduled move-in period (May 9-11) are permitted to engage in the following activities:

  • move freely on campus, including visiting the Brown Bookstore in-person engage in outdoor exercise or recreation; wearing a mask is required unless you are able to easily, continuously and measurably maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet
  • gather in groups, preferably outdoors, of no more than 5 students; wearing a mask is required unless you are able to easily, continuously and measurably maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet
  • order contactless food delivery directly to your residence hall

The University remains at Campus Activity Level 2, and students should continue to observe the guidelines outlined on the Healthy Brown website for this level, including dining and socializing in their pods (a stable group of five people or less or the number of your immediate room, suite or apartment mates). At Campus Activity Level 2, going off campus for non-essential activities (shopping, bars, dining, fitness and recreation facilities, etc.) is not permitted for undergraduate students living on campus. Please note that we view taking advantage of the opportunity to get COVID vaccinated (see below) as an essential activity and would strongly encourage you to do so.

Dining Services staff will need approximately one day to transition to a “Build-Your-Own-Meal” style of service allowing students to have more options. Please be patient while that transition occurs.

Students approved to arrive outside of Quiet Period will be expected to quarantine in accordance with Brown University and Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) guidelines. Late arrival students will observe a separate Quiet Period or quarantine in a temporary assignment for 7 days or until the negative results of two cycles of testing separated by 4 days has occurred. Prior to arriving on campus, Health Services will reach out to you with the specific details of your individual quarantine.

In-person classes will begin, as scheduled, on Wednesday, May 19.

As a reminder, you have two options for obtaining COVID vaccines available to you now.

Option 1:  You may travel to the Dunkin Donuts Center daily via the Brown shuttle. The Brown Vaccine Express shuttle will make trips between Hillel (80 Brown St.) and the Dunkin Donuts Center (1 La Salle Square) Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, the “Chestnut/RiverHouse Express'' shuttle will provide transportation to the Dunkin Donuts Center.

Option 2: You can register online for the on-campus clinic scheduled for Monday, May 17, between 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the OMAC (235 Hope Street). Please remember to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

If the summer undergraduate student population can reach a 90% vaccination rate and general public health conditions continue to improve as we expect, we will be able to more quickly return to some of the normal campus operations we are all missing, such as in-person dining, student events and increased capacity at the Nelson Fitness Center.
