To Brown Class of 2024 Undergraduates: Fall 2020 Courses and Pre-Registration

Updates

Dear Class of 2024,

We are so excited to welcome you to the Brown community. As President Paxson shared in her message on July 7, all incoming first-year students will have the option to take one remote course, free-of-charge, in the fall semester. The following message shares detailed information about the fall pre-registration process and next steps.

Fall 2020 Course Offerings

Official course information for the Fall 2020 term is now available in Courses@Brown (CAB). CAB is an important resource that you can use to explore course offerings, review syllabi, and register for courses; if you would like to learn more about CAB, we encourage you to review this video tutorial.

Pre-Registration using Primary Cart

If you are considering taking a remote course at Brown this fall, and would like to pre-register in advance, please share with us your preferred course list by Noon EDT on Monday, August 10 by adding all course components into your Primary Cart in CAB. When placing a course in your Primary Cart, you must add all required course components (e.g., conferences, labs, and sections) to the cart. During the week of August 10th, we will use your Primary Cart information, together with course enrollment limits and prerequisite rules, to register you in up to one course.

You can begin adding courses to your Primary Cart right now, and you are welcome to add as many courses as you would like. Adding all required course components (including conferences, labs, and sections) for at least 5 courses into your Primary Cart by Noon EDT on August 10th will provide you with the highest likelihood for a course match. After pre-registration, you will also have an opportunity to change your course as you discover and explore more options speaking with your academic advisor and Meiklejohn Peer Advisor.

Sharing Interests using Advising Cart

We would also like to use your specific curricular interests to inform matches with your academic advisors. For this purpose, you can create a secondary cart called “Advising”. To learn how to add courses to your carts, please click here to see the related segment in the video tutorial. When adding courses to your Advising cart, you may want to include 3-4 introductory courses in concentrations that interest you, as well as 2-4 other courses to explore Brown’s Open Curriculum.

Webinar and Advising Resources

There will be a webinar on Friday, July 31 at 10 am EDT to help guide your academic decisions and explain the course pre-registration process. Before the webinar, we encourage you to read the attached Designing Your Brown Education as well as the explanation of course placement for AP/IB scores on the College website. If you have questions after reviewing these resources, please reach out to advising@brown.edu to be connected with a peer advisor.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes,

Rashid Zia,
Dean of the College
