To All Aided Returning Students: 2020-2021 Financial Aid Notice of Award

Updates

Dear Student,

The Office Financial Aid is working with the Office of the President, Residential Life, the College, and other campus partners to support students as Brown prepares for the 2020-21 academic year. Following President Christina Paxson’s recent announcement of plans for the phased resumption of on-campus instruction for students who choose to study in Providence, we look forward to working with you and your family to finalize your educational financing plan.

The information provided in Banner Self-Service will assist you and your family in understanding the cost of attending Brown, your family’s expected contribution toward these costs, and any financial aid for which you are eligible. Your current financial aid package is based on a residential (on-campus) cost of attendance, which includes support for travel to/from campus as well as the full costs of on-campus housing and a comprehensive meal plan.

If your residency plans change (e.g., you opt to study remotely in any term), an adjustment will be made to your travel allowance and certain fees. However, the full cost of on-campus room and meals will continue to be included in the cost of attendance as a housing and meal allowance for students who opt to live off-campus (with permission) or to study remotely outside of the Providence area. Including these expenses as an allowance within the cost of attendance helps us estimate and support costs that will still be incurred for meals, housing, and other related expenses such as internet service that are provided with on-campus housing. Only students living on campus will be charged for room and meals. Please see the Bursar website for additional tuition and fee information.

Please note though that, if the University decides at any point in time (e.g. due to public health guidance) that it is necessary for one or more semesters to be offered fully online through remote learning only, your financial aid award may be modified due to changes in your room and meal allowance, as well as any other changes to the overall cost of attendance

Given that this will be a unique academic year, it is imperative that you carefully read all the messages provided under your Current Award Information in Banner Self-Service. These important messages will assist you in understanding how your financial aid eligibility was determined.

Responses to frequently asked questions are provided on the Office of Financial Aid website to assist you with understanding financial matters that are unique to the University’s 2020-21 operating plan. If after reading the FAQs you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at Financial_Aid@Brown.edu. Additional information such as financing options, can be found on our website.

We in the Office of Financial Aid understand that these are particularly difficult times in many ways and realize that among all the challenges, financial matters may be of great concern. Our goal is to support you in navigating educational financial planning. We are here to help, and we look forward to welcoming you back to campus should you choose to pursue your studies in Providence.

Sincerely,

Jim Tilton
