Upon completing the online education and prevention module, students will need to agree to each element of the Student Commitment and affirm their intention to comply with the health and prevention requirements.
In consideration of your return to Brown University either to live in a residence hall and/or access resources on campus, you must review and agree to this Commitment. This Commitment is similar to a required acknowledgment for employees. The Commitment sets forth requirements, expectations, and understandings that will help support your health and the health of others (peers, faculty, staff, and local community members), while minimizing the risk of contracting COVID-19. Brown is requiring that students returning to campus make this personal commitment to take responsibility to work together and with the University to help protect the health and safety of our community during this unprecedented global pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic is a global, national, and state public health emergency. By engaging in campus activities, including attending classes, living in a residence hall, utilizing campus dining, and participating in activities and sports, there is a risk of exposure to and infection with COVID-19. We ask that you agree to each entry indicating that you have read carefully and agree to commit to follow each requirement.
To help manage those risks and protect my health and safety and that of my community, I commit to the following:
I commit to following the policies established by the University and the State of Rhode Island, whichever is more restrictive, regarding attending or hosting social gatherings especially in terms of the number of people allowed. I acknowledge that social gatherings held in violation of policy have contributed to large outbreaks of COVID-19 in other higher education communities.
I commit to wear a face covering or mask in accordance with the University’s COVID-19 Face Covering Guidance and the State of Rhode Island Face Covering Rules, as they may be updated from time to time. I understand that accommodations will be made if I have a health condition that prevents me from wearing a face covering, and I should contact Student Accessibility Services to request a reasonable accommodation.
In addition to wearing a face covering as described above, I commit to following CDC Guidance for preventing the spread of COVID-19 including, but not limited to, (a) social distancing of at least six (6) feet when possible; (b) washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60% to 95% alcohol and covering all surfaces of my hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry; and (c) covering my mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
I commit, as a condition of my enrollment at Brown, to completing a daily online symptom tracker and to undergoing required testing for COVID-19 at the location, time, and dates established by the University to determine if I have contracted the virus and to enable the University to monitor infection rates in the Brown community in order to protect my health and safety and the health and safety of both the Brown and local community.
I commit to calling University Health Services immediately at (401) 863-1330, and undergoing any COVID-19 testing recommended and following any treatment or mitigation measures such as isolation or quarantine, if I exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19 as established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As symptoms of COVID-19 may be updated from time to time, I commit to periodically reviewing the CDC website.
I commit to immediately notify University Health Services at (401) 863-1330 if I test positive for COVID-19 so that I can receive appropriate care and support. I commit to complying with all instructions given to me by the University including without limitation, isolating myself in a residence hall room assigned to me by the University or my off-campus residence until I have been cleared by my health care provider, and cooperating with University Health Services and the Rhode Island Department of Health regarding any contact tracing that they may perform.
I commit to not traveling back to campus until I have been cleared by my health care provider if I test positive for COVID-19 prior to my return to Brown, or if I am experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19 prior to my return to Brown.
I commit to cooperating with all University directives for isolating, quarantining, and contact tracing. If a contact tracer from University Health Services communicates with and informs me that I have had contact with an individual who tested positive for the virus, I commit to cooperating with all University directives for quarantining myself in a residence hall room assigned by the University or my off-campus residence. If I am contacted by the Rhode Island Department of Health, I commit to notify University Health Services immediately. If an individual representing a public health agency other than the Rhode Island Department of Health contacts me for contact tracing purposes, I will verify this source with University Health Services before revealing any personal information.
I commit to complying with all University travel restrictions and visitor policies that are included on the Healthy Brown website because travel to and from the University can unnecessarily increase the risk of exposure to and infection of COVID-19. I understand that these policies may evolve, and I should consult the website for updates before considering travel.
I commit to following new and modified information and health and safety requirements set forth by the University as they become available because public health and medical experts continue to learn more about COVID-19 over time.
If I am a student worker or become a student worker at some point during the academic year, I commit to reading the Brown University COVID-19 Campus Safety Policy, as it may be modified from time to time. I commit to following the policy at all times while working, whether onsite or in a non-Brown location. I agree to follow any additional rules or guidelines set by my work location, my supervisor, or, in the case of research, the Principal Investigator. If I have any questions about the policy or about my responsibilities, I commit to ask my supervisor or a member of University Human Resources. I understand that my failure to abide by the provisions of this paragraph will be handled by University Human Resources.
I understand that the University has given all students the choice to complete coursework for the fall 2020 semester remotely or on campus, or in the case of graduate and medical school students with required in-person activities, the choice to complete selected coursework remotely with prior approval, or take a leave of absence if unable to participate in any in-person activities. In choosing to return to campus as the option that works best for me, I understand and I am committed to following these necessary health and safety requirements given the seriousness of the public health situation and the fact that the coronavirus is transmitted through community spread. Because the University cannot guarantee a campus free from the risk of becoming infected with COVID-19, I understand that my failure to follow these health and safety requirements increases the risk that I may become infected with COVID-19 or infect others, and that I or other members of the community may experience severe illness including personal injury and death as a result of becoming infected with COVID-19. Because I care about my own health and safety and the health and safety of others at Brown and in the local community, I am committing to follow all University policies, guidance, and restrictions in this Commitment because they are designed to support individual and collective health by preventing the spread of COVID-19.
I hereby commit to comply with these health and safety requirements. I understand that failure to do so may result in review and action by the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards. I understand that failure to abide by these requirements is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct and will be addressed through the COVID-19 Student Conduct Procedures. I understand that severe or repeated violations of public health guidance will result in removal from campus and academic suspension.
